Combo duel · 2 players
Start playing Yu-Gi-Oh!
Summon monsters, set Spells and Traps, and build chains of effects without a separate mana system. The game is fast and expressive once you learn the field.
Use two ready decks and learn only the summons those decks actually contain.

01 · The basics
Know what you are trying to do
The objective
Use Monsters, Spells and Traps to reduce your opponent’s 8,000 Life Points to zero. There is no mana deck: the limits come from summons, card text and the cards in your hand.
Ways the game ends
- Reduce the opposing Duelist to zero Life Points.
- Your opponent cannot draw a required card.
- A specific card effect creates an alternate win condition.
02 · What to buy
Start with one complete experience
A legal, balanced starting point teaches more than a handful of random products.
Best first purchase
Two Starter or Structure Decks
Give each player one sealed preconstructed deck from a similar release period. Keep the Main Deck unchanged and use its included guide or playmat.
Your night-one checklist
- One ready-to-play deck per player
- A way to track Life Points
- A playmat or clear field-zone reference
Skip for now: Skip mixing random booster cards into the decks and skip summon types your decks do not use. Yu-Gi-Oh! becomes much easier when the first card pool stays small.
03 · First match
Set up, take a turn, then play
Keep the first game open-handed. Explain each choice as it happens; save edge cases for match two.
Set up the table
- 01
Set the field
Place Main Deck, Extra Deck and Graveyard in their marked zones. A mat is useful because zones matter.
- 02
Start at 8,000 LP
Track both Life Point totals with paper, a calculator or the official NEURON support app.
- 03
Draw five cards
Each Duelist starts with five cards. Randomly decide who takes the first turn.
What a turn feels like
- 01
Draw and Standby
Draw for the turn, then resolve any effects that mention the Standby Phase.
- 02
Main Phase 1
Normal Summon or Set once, use Special Summons allowed by card text, and activate or Set Spells and Traps.
- 03
Battle, Main 2, End
Attack opposing monsters or the opponent, make final plays in Main Phase 2, then end the turn.
Your first-night plan
- 01
0–10 minutes
Lay out the field and identify Monster, Spell, Trap and Extra Deck cards in your specific decks.
- 02
10–30 minutes
Play open-handed. Explain possible responses before either player commits to a chain.
- 03
After the duel
Replay with hidden hands. Look up only the card or timing question that actually occurred.
04 · Go further
Build confidence before complexity
- 01
Use Master Duel for repetition
The digital game teaches legal moves and timing, though its opening tutorials soon lead into much stronger decks.
- 02
Install NEURON
The official support app includes card search, deck lists, Life Point tools, event registration and store finding.
- 03
Try an Official Tournament Store
Ask when the store runs beginner-friendly or casual play and tell your opponent that you are learning.
Words you will hear
- Normal Summon
- The standard summon you can normally perform once per turn.
- Special Summon
- A summon performed by a rule or card effect; many can happen in a turn.
- Set
- Place a card face down.
- Chain
- A sequence of effects that resolves from the newest response backwards.
- GY
- The Graveyard, where many used or destroyed cards go.
- Extra Deck
- A separate deck for Fusion, Synchro, Xyz and Link Monsters.
Common first questions
Do I need to learn every summon type?
No. Learn the Normal and Special Summons in your ready deck, then add Extra Deck mechanics one at a time.
Why stay near 40 cards?
The official deck range is 40–60, but a smaller Main Deck draws its important cards more consistently.
Can I use any old card?
Card legality and copy limits can change. Check the current Forbidden & Limited List before organised play.
